Day 4 School Visit
We’ll bid farewell to Antigua and take a short bus ride to visit a rural school where we’ll share a snack and conversation with locals and understand the importance of education to end the cycle of poverty in countries like Guatemala. We’ll then set our sights on Guatemala’s highlands where Mayan culture and volcanoes rule. We’ll have dinner and sleep in a lovely hotel fronting glorious Lake Atitlán.
Day 5 Lake Cruise; Weaving Coop; Chocolate; Civil War & Current Issues
We’ll devote this day to exploring the magnificent lake. We’ll take a 30 minute boat ride to the lively town of San Juan La Laguna, where we’ll visit a weaving cooperative and learn about the importance of this Mayan art. We’ll also learn about the art of chocolate at a cacao producer and have ample time to explore on our own. We’ll meet before dinner to learn about the current political situation in Guatemala from a friend who worked for the United Nations during the Civil War and attended the signing of the peace accords.
Day 6 Free time, Santa Cruz school
Today offers several options. Some may choose to take the day off to savor our hotel’s lush gardens, view terraces and pool, explore the nature trails and butterfly exhibit a ten minute walk away, or visit the nearby town of Panajachel. Others may choose to join us for a half day visit to the scenic lakeside village of Santa Cruz where a creative “school” (Colegio Siqaján) provides community empowered education including a variety of adult instruction with the goal of teaching everything from business skills, to the latest agricultural techiniques to cooking skills. However you spend your day, let’s have dinner together at our hotel tonight.
